Looking for Win The Storm?
Win The Storm is an industry conference for roofing and storm restoration companies — not a roofer. If you are a homeowner with storm damage, you are in the right place. If you run a restoration company, the contractor resources are at the bottom of this page.
The first 72 hours after a storm
Stay safe
Stay off the roof and away from downed lines. Look from the ground, and from the attic if it is safe.
Stop further damage
Put a tarp over openings or have a roofer do it, and catch interior leaks. Keep the receipts — most policies expect reasonable steps to prevent further damage.
Document everything
Take photos and video of the roof, gutters, siding, windows, fences and any interior damage, and note the storm date.
Report the claim
Call your insurer or file online promptly, and write down the claim number.
Choosing a roofer after a storm
- Check the North Carolina license where one is required, and ask for an insurance certificate
- Get a written estimate with photos of the damage
- Do not sign a contract or contingency agreement on the spot
- Be wary of anyone offering to cover your deductible
- Prefer contractors with a local address and local references
What the insurance adjuster looks for
Adjusters look for damage the storm created — hail bruising, creased or missing shingles, dented metal — rather than age-related wear. Having your roofer present and your photos ready helps make sure nothing is missed.
Storm help in the Triangle
Raleigh, Durham and Cary homeowners can compare local roofers city by city and check the North Carolina storm center for recent storm reports.
Storm damage questions
How long do I have to file a roof claim after a storm?
It depends on your policy, and many require prompt notice. Check your policy and report the damage as soon as you can.
Will insurance pay for a new roof after a storm?
If the storm caused covered damage, your policy may pay for repair or replacement minus your deductible. Wear and tear is generally not covered.
Should I call a roofer before the adjuster comes?
Many homeowners have a roofer inspect first and attend the adjuster’s visit, so the storm damage is documented and nothing is missed.
Is whenthestorm.com connected to the Win The Storm conference?
No. It is an independent page published by the National Roofing Directory.
